About Me

Hilary Hemingway

2022 Hilary Hemingway Art Bio:

Hilary Hemingway was born in Miami, Florida. She spent her first two years living aboard a boat and took her first baby steps in Jamaica. Eventually her parents bought a home on San Marino Island in Miami Beach, but she still spent every possible minute afloat on a wide range of boats from Boston Whaler, Hobie Cat, Lazers, racing hydroplane, wind surfers, a 36’ trawler, 28’ sloop, just about anything that she could build, buy or float. Hilary spent most of her summers in the Bahamas helping her father Leicester “Les” Hemingway, younger brother of Ernest Hemingway, with his Bimini Island Newspaper.

Although Hilary has had five published books and two theatrical plays produced, she has spent most of the last 40 years working in the visual arts. She has written for film and television, and has produced & directed TV news and documentaries. She won a National Screenwriting Award for her bio picture, A Light Within the Shadow. Her documentary on two Holocaust survivors, I Believe, was narrated by Leonard Nimoy. Hilary later won a Telly Award in Journalism for Literary Explorer’s: Hemingway In Cuba. Her latest screenplay, Hemingway and Fuentes, was co-written with Andy Garcia. Garcia’s interest in rebuilding a Wheeler yacht for the role of Hemingway’s boat, the Pilar, started Hilary’s collection of Pilar artwork. Hilary and Wes Wheeler, grandson of the original designer/builder at Wheeler Yachts, were able to board the Pilar in Cuba to inspect and measure it in detail. The accuracy and authenticity of her Pilar works reflect this unique access to the original boat.

Hilary refined her love of fine art under the eye of her father-in-law, Dr. August Freundlich, retired Dean of Fine Art at Syracuse and USF. She began a series of works on marine life, moving to the bold colors of the Caribbean palette. Her newer work features the natural beauty of the North Carolina mountains. She still uses the same swirling shapes and colorful patterns, but now they become wild scenes like a flowing river cutting through mountain forests.

Hilary describes her art as, “A colorful departure from reality". It’s art seen though  a different lens, but still with a recognizable perspective of life. "I want people to see a story.”

Hilary’s canvas art has been sold in Florida West coast galleries and at multiple charity auctions to raise money for Golisano Children’s Hospital,  Hospice House in Bonita Springs, Arts for ACT Gala rising funds for Women Abuse Counseling in Lee & Henry Counties, and High Country Caregivers.

Hilary is married to the New York Times bestselling author, Jeff Lindsay, and is the proud mother of three splendid daughters.

Inspiration

Hilary believes all artwork should show movement, passion, and the survival of nature.

All the while, using color choices that are surreal, looking at nature through an angel’s eyes.

Techniques

Recently Hilary has returned to her love of fine art, using the bold color palette of the Caribbean.

Her subject matter began with marine life and her newer works feature the natural beauty of the North Carolina mountains.

Original artworks are mix media and acrylics on canvas
